Leadership Lab: Lessons From Sports

This course will meet in person, every other Monday evenings from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM:

Jan 26th, Feb 9th, 23rd and March 9th

St. Mary's Hall South -  Boston College

Leaders in all fields can learn from research in sports. In this unique leadership experience, you'll join a journey with leaders in different fields to refine goal achievement and develop positive psychology coaching skills. These will help you to achieve more and strengthen your teams and community.

You'll set and achieve a five-week leadership goal through conversations, videos, a workbook, articles, podcasts, and lectures. You'll explore theories and the neuroscience of excellence and deliberate practice, positive psychology, habit, and innovation.

You'll expand your network, sharpen your leadership goals, and leave with tools and strategies that will serve you long after the course ends. Participants will earn a Boston College certificate in goal achievement. Students must attend each class to be eligible for the certificate.

Presenter

Cathy Utzschneider

Dr. Utzschneider, Ed.D., M.B.A., and M.A., professor of sports leadership and coaching at Boston College for 20 years, will lead this course. A world-class coach and athlete who serves as the performance columnist for National Masters News, she's a 10x national champion (running, aquathlon) who's been ranked in the top 5 in the world. She's coached Olympians, world record holders, and over 65 national champions; written four books; led a coaching business with orthopedic surgeons, executives, and Division I coaches; and worked with numerous leaders to achieve their professional goals. Guest speakers will include 2014 Boston College and former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tyler Murphy, Division I Head Coaches, and former Olympic swim coach Bruno Darzi, who coached legendary Olympian Dara Torres.

Learning Objectives

1) Identify major theories of excellence, including 10 Years, 10,000 hours theory of excellence, and explain the neuroscience of deliberate practice.

2) Learn the latest findings on the physiology of habits and strategies to develop new habits that align with goals.

3) Understand the science of building positive mindsets and how they can be leveraged to improve satisfaction and performance.

4) Describe theories of change and innovation and help teams imagine and realize new goals.
